Holiday Horror: One Dead, Another Injured in Targeted Shooting at Florida Mall
FLORIDA: A tragic incident unfolded just two days before Christmas at a Florida mall, leaving one person dead and another injured in a targeted shooting. The unsettling event occurred around 3:40 p.m. on Saturday at the bustling Paddock Mall in Ocala, central Florida.
Police Chief Mike Balken shared that the male victim, who lost his life, was believed to be the intended target. A woman also suffered a gunshot wound to her leg but is expected to recover from non-life-threatening injuries. Additionally, there were reports of chest pains and a broken arm among those present during the incident.
Amid the chaos, the mall, filled with holiday shoppers, was swiftly evacuated. Chief Balken expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “This is the worst thing we can imagine right now at this time of the year.” He emphasized the tragic timing, adding, “Somebody has suffered a loss in their family. It’s a horrible time of year for this to happen ever. It’s unfortunate during the holidays.”
The police chief announced that the mall would remain closed for the next 12 hours as investigators delved into the incident. He urged people to avoid the area during this time. In the search for the suspect, witnesses were implored to come forward, given the high number of shoppers present at the mall during the shooting.
Eyewitness Syriah Williams, 18, described the terrifying moments while shopping at Bath & Body Works with her mother. Gunshots rang out, causing chaos, and store employees directed everyone to run. Williams found refuge behind the store counters.
Jennifer Hunt Murty, owner of the Ocala Gazette, shared her experience as a volunteer at a gift-wrapping station when gunfire erupted nearby. Dropping to the ground, she quickly texted the police chief about the active shooter situation and provided crucial information about the injured victims for prompt medical assistance. Despite the tense circumstances, she focused on her responsibilities, stating, “You never know how you’re going to react in those situations, but I went to work.”
UPDATE: There is no longer an active shooting situation. There are multiple people injured. The suspect is believed to have fled. The mall is being evacuated at this time. Please avoid the area as police investigate. https://t.co/j8Uk5iYjob
